Privacy notice
This notice explains what personal information this site processes, why it is allowed to, how long it is kept, and how to object. It is written against the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
This notice is not final. The sections marked “to be confirmed” must be completed before this site publishes any real record.
What is processed
About people in the record. Only what named news outlets or official statements have already published: a name or an anonymised label, an age, a suburb, dates, and the case status. The site deliberately does not hold identity numbers, home addresses at street-number precision, contact details for families, photographs of the deceased, or any information about a person who has not been charged.
About readers. Standard web server logs, and a single browser preference stored on your own device so the content advisory is not shown twice. There are no advertising trackers and no accounts.
On what footing
Information about people in the record is processed for journalistic purposes and in the public interest: this is a public record of matters already published by the press. That footing carries obligations rather than removing them — the site minimises what it holds, publishes only what a named source has published, and stops holding anything it cannot justify.
Reader information is processed to run and secure the site, and for nothing else.
How long it is kept
Records about the case are kept for as long as the case is a matter of public record, subject to any request under the section below and to any court order restricting publication.
The full text of an article is used only to extract the entry and is discarded within 30 days; it is never republished. Server logs are kept for a short operational period — the exact retention period is to be confirmed.
Objection, correction and removal
You may ask to see what the site holds about you or about a family member, ask for it to be corrected, or object to it being published. Families do not have to give a reason to ask for a record to be changed or taken down.
Requests go to [email protected]. A request is acknowledged, checked against the sources the entry came from, and answered — including when the answer is that the entry stands, with the reason.
You may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
Information Officer
